On Saturday April 9th Denver Seminary with the International Christian Mentoring Network held the 2011 Mentoring Conference.
This all-day conference featured engaging workshops, each offered twice (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) to offer you the greatest opportunity to attend sessions that interest you most. “Mentoring Across the Generations: Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?” – Dr. Elisabeth Selzer
This practical workshop will help you with specific skills and strategies to create through mentoring a learning culture that supports relationships of mutual respect and an appreciation for generational differences. With four generations present in the current workplace, generational differences can be a major cause of some challenges in your organization. Mentoring can take organizations from conflictive and ineffective to synergistic and productive.

“Using Assessment Tools to Foster Development” – Dr. Brian Jones
What’s your next step with mentees who struggle to identify personal or professional goals to pursue? Assessment instruments can help mentors and mentees identify productive goals. In this workshop we will discuss and share some good assessment instruments and how to use them in a mentoring relationship. Do you have a favorite self-assessment that you recommend as a tool to help mentees successfully select measurable development objectives? If so, bring it to the workshop to share with others.
Brian is a licensed psychologist specializing in relationships, character assessment and development, conflict resolution, research, and evaluation. He is CEO and CFO of THE MENTORING GROUP and The Coalition of Counseling Centers in Grass Valley, CA.

“Mid-Life Matters in Mentoring” – Dr. Sharon Heron
Mid-life can be a profoundly disorientating time for many in the spiritual journey – a time when people look to their inner lives and are deeply challenged by the questions that emerge. This workshop will examine the challenges mentees face in middle age, explore the accompanying potential for spiritual growth, and show those who are mature in their middle years how to use their wisdom and experience to mentor others through difficult times.
Sharon is founder of Connexions Plus in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is a conference speaker across Europe and the U.S., as well as a consultant and lecturer with educational, charitable and faith-based organizations.

“A Theology of Transformational Mentoring” – Dr. Don Payne
From Scripture we know that God wants to transform us and that he actually does so! We also know that he uses us as instruments in that process with each other. But how does God use us as mentors in the transformation of others? What is the role of a mentor in that process? How do we recognize both our responsibilities and our limitations? This workshop will address these questions and more.
Don is Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of Theology and Ministry at Denver Seminary, where he teaches theology and provides overall leadership for the training and mentoring program.

“Case Studies in Launching and Sustaining a Mentoring Ministry” – Marcia Schultz
Many of us want to see healthy, vibrant mentoring relationships in our areas of ministry but don’t know how to create, nurture, or sustain structures that foster those relationships. This workshop will explore ways to develop and sustain a mentoring ministry structure appropriate to your unique setting. This will be an interactive workshop so come prepared to participate and learn together!

“Talking Heads and Listening Hearts” – Wes Roberts
This workshop will focus on knowing and navigating the differences between giving advice and listening in a healthy mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees alike need to keep in mind what they bring to the relationship with their own life experiences, a life that is experiencing consistent deep-change and whole-life transformation. Keeping that goal in mind will radically inform how we listen, what we learn, and how we love and live in every relationship of our lives.
