I love Christmas. Nothing reminds me more of God’s extravagant generosity than celebrating the birth of His Son. Dr. Grounds described it this way in the closing line of one of his Christmas poems, “That God in his love was spendthrift too!”
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Denver Seminary’s Alumni eNews, the Alumni Connection. It is our desire to keep you better informed about what’s going on at the seminary. We want to stay in touch with you and rejoice with you over the Lord’s marvelous provision and leading in our ministries. We’d love to hear from you, pray for you, and explore how we might serve you better.
After eighteen months in my role at the seminary, I can say without reservation that you are remembered and appreciated throughout the seminary community. I’m reminded of the Apostle John’s words in 3 John 4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” And so it is with those of us at the seminary.
Loving and serving our spendthrift God,

Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, North Carolina
One of the Advancement department’s goals for 2010 has been to connect with our alumni. In October, Dr. Scott and Melanie Wenig traveled to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, North Carolina where they hosted a luncheon at Maggiano’s for 18 alums and family members. One of the highlights was the presence of Rev. Oliver Perry, a graduate from the very first Seminary class in 1953, who told of how God has used him both locally in the U.S. as well as globally in Honduras and Costa Rica over the years! As we went around the room, each graduate told of God’s grace in their lives and how they presently serve the cause of Christ in a variety of venues and organizations. What an encouragement to hear their stories!
ETS/SBL Conference in Atlanta, GA
Denver Seminary hosted an alumni breakfast during the annual Society of Biblical Literature conference that was held in Atlanta in November. There were 25 alumni, faculty and friends in attendance who came from all over the country and the world! Manuel Alexandre from Lisbon, Portugal, was the earliest graduate in the group from the class of 1964. We were fascinated to learn of his leadership in evangelical circles in Portugal where he served as a pastor for many years; president of the Portuguese Baptist convention; director of the Baptist seminary; Professor of Classical Literature at the University of Lisbon; and key member of the team that revised the Portuguese Bible Society’s contemporary translation of the Bible. Be on the lookout for an alumni gathering at ETS/SBL 2011 in San Francisco.
More alumni gatherings are being planned in 2011. Keep an eye on this section for future announcements!

Dr. Craig Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, was one of fifteen members of the Committee on Bible Translation for the updated New International Version of the Bible. This updates one of the most popular and widely distributed English translations of the Scripture since the 1970s. It is now available on-line at www.biblegateway.com and is slated for a March 2011 release in hard copy. More than 94% of the text remains unchanged from the 1984 revision. Just under 4% of the text matches changes introduced in Today’s New International Version (2005). Approximately 1% reverts to the wording of the 1984 NIV from the TNIV and approximately 1% of the wording is brand new. These changes update the language to current English style, take into account new scholarship, and work to express the Bible even more clearly.
Dr. Blomberg’s blog "New Testament Musings" has been listed at #21 in the "Top 50 Blogs by Theology Professors."
