Snowshoe Adventure Preview
February 14 & 15, 2008 and March 18 & 19, 2008
Where are we going and how will we get there?
We will snow shoe in the Bear Lake area of Rocky Mountain National Park, located about 90 minutes from the Seminary. It's an amazingly beautiful place: deep green forests, glacier carved valleys, jagged peaks and abundant wildlife. We will travel together from campus in vans provided by the Seminary.
What if I've never snowshoed before?
No problem. It's true: if you can walk, you can shoe. Your trip leader will provide you with quality snowshoes, instruction, and encouragement. We will stay together as a group.
Do I have to be physically fit?
Yes, reasonably so. We will cover short distances, stay mostly on trails, and avoid steep slopes. Exact distance is dependant on weather, snow conditions and the group.
Will I have problems with altitude?
Not likely. We will be snowshoeing at about 10,000 feet, but we will not travel great distances or travel quickly. We will take breaks whenever anyone needs one. Staying well hydrated is the key to avoiding high altitude headaches. When first visiting the area, many people feel either slightly out of breath or a reduced ability to perform physically. That's a natural response to the thinner air. But God designed our bodies to acclimatize to higher altitudes. If you experience any discomfort during this trip, it is important that you inform your trip leader. Please help us to care for you.
What do I need to bring?
Bring a wind-proof outer layer for your upper and lower body, insulating layers, a warm hat, mittens or warm gloves, non-cotton socks, hiking boots, and sunglasses. Your trip leader can provide extra clothing on a first-come basis, and winter boots can be rented for you. Also bring a water bottle or some type of hydration system. When snow shoeing, lunch begins right after breakfast and ends right before dinner. This is not a good time to fast or diet. Bring a camera if you have one! Also, if you have a day pack please bring it along. Sorry: no dogs and please leave your iPod or other personal music device behind.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
Jim Doenges is your trip leader and you can contact him at or 303-594-8113. Jim is a certified Wilderness First Responder, Avalanche Professional and LNT Master Educator with a Master of Science degree in Biology. He serves as a mentor at Denver Seminary and is a licensed lay minister with over 20 years of outdoor leadership experience.

We'll travel by vans from the Seminary.
Do I have to be physically fit?
Generally speaking, no. We will, however, have to hike a short a distance from the parking lot to the climbing area.
Will I have a problem with altitude?
Not likely. We will be climbing and rappelling at about 9500 feet.

Creation Caravan: Rocky Mountain National Park Tour
Where are we going and how will we get there?
We will be going to spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park, located about 90 minutes from the Seminary. We will stop at scenic overlooks and take tundra strolls along Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved through road in America. God's miniature alpine wildflowers are abundant and colorful, and there will still be snowfields on the peaks! As time and weather allow, we may also stop at a visitor center, a lake, a museum, and for wildlife such as elk, bighorn sheep, or moose. The Park has the highest density of naturally fed elk in the world. We will travel together from campus in vans provided by the Seminary.
Do I have to be physically fit?
Not at all. We may take numerous strolls but we will walk very short distances on level terrain, and mostly on trails. However, if you are fit and enjoy the outdoors you will see and learn about many places to return to and explore.
Will I have problems with altitude?
Not likely. We will travel up to 12,000 feet in the vans, but you will not be exerting yourself physically.
Low elevations in the Park can be pleasantly warm, but we will also visit higher elevations where it can be windy, quite cool, and where afternoon thunderstorms are common. We will retreat to the vans if the weather is threatening. Bring a wind-proof outer layer for your upper body, a warm sweater or jacket, hat, and sunglasses. Shorts are OK, but you should bring wind pants or sweatpants, too. Bring a water bottle or some type of hydration system. Also bring a camera if you have one! Sorry: no dogs and please leave your iPod or other personal music device behind.

Mt. Evans "14er" Tour
Where are we going and how will we get there?
We will be traveling up the highest paved road in North America, located about an hour from the Seminary. The famous Mt. Evans Road is also unique because this ribbon of pavement is completely surrounded by a Wilderness Area. The mountain scenery is magnificent. No other place offers better opportunities to see mountain goats and bighorn sheep on the same day. We will take a stroll at a beautiful alpine lake, and take the short walk to the very top of the mountain from the summit parking area. From the top we will see other 14,000-foot peaks and others peaks too numerous to count. As time and weather allow, we may also stop to take a closer look at alpine wildflowers, and a grove of bristlecone pines that were alive at the time of Christ's earthly ministry. We will travel together from campus in vans provided by the Seminary.
Do I have to be physically fit?
Not at all. The walks we will take are very short and on trails. However, if you are fit and enjoy the outdoors you will see and learn about some places to return to and explore.
Will I have problems with altitude?
Not likely. We will travel up to 14,000 feet in the vans, but you will not be exerting yourself much physically.
Mt. Evans is a great place to escape the mid-summer heat. As we ascend, the temperatures will decline. On the upper half of the mountain it can be windy, quite cool, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. We will retreat to the vans if the weather is threatening. Bring a wind-proof outer layer for your upper body, a warm sweater or jacket, hat and sunglasses. Shorts are OK, but you should bring wind pants or sweatpants too. Also bring water bottle or some type of hydration system. Bring a camera if you have one! Sorry: no dogs and please leave your iPod or other personal music device behind.
