Degree Programs at Denver Seminary

Denver Seminary is a theological school offering a sound biblical and theological education to graduate and doctoral level students. Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in the greater metro area of Denver, Colorado, Denver Seminary provides an environment that is both refreshingly beautiful and academically challenging. With a range of degrees and degree programs, some not found at other seminaries, Denver Seminary can help equip you for Christian leadership in this increasingly global Christianity.

Master of Divinity Degrees

Master of Divinity (MDiv): The Master of Divinity is the degree of choice for those desiring to enter ordained ministry and for those who want a deep, theological education with the widest variety of options after graduation. Denver Seminary's core MDiv program provides sound theological training that ties languages to homiletics and knowledge to real spiritual growth. At Denver Seminary, MDiv students experience holistic, integrated theological education. The MDiv degree is also available with several concentrations, to allow you some flexibility and customization in the curriculum. A few of the available concentrations are listed below, but for a complete list of MDiv concentrations at Denver Seminary, please visit the Master of Divinity (MDiv) Degree page.

For MDiv concentrations that also have a counter-part in Denver Seminary's MA program, students may wish to consider their specific career paths when choosing between the two degrees. The MDiv offers deeper and broader training in biblical studies and theology than their MA counterparts, and many churches and denominations require and MDiv for ordination. While the MA programs may offer more specific and specialized study in a particular area, the MDiv typically opens the broadest range of possibilities for ministry opportunities.

  • MDiv with a Chaplaincy concentration: One of the only programs of its kind available in an evangelical institution, Denver Seminary's chaplaincy training program is designed to equip future chaplains for ordained, theological ministry.

  • MDiv with a concentration in Christian Formation and Soul Care: Many evagelical Christians are rediscovering the importance of the ancient practices of spiritual formation and soul care. This concentration trains spiritual directors and soul care providers with the tools they need for effective spiritual formation and guidance.

  • MDiv with a concentration in Intercultural Ministry: With the ever expanding global arena -- both in secular and Christian worlds, it is important that leaders who understand how to minister in intercultural contexts be equipped for effective service. Denver Seminary offers Intercultural Ministry programs to train future leaders for this purpose (see also the MA in Leadership with a concentration in Intercultural Ministry).

  • MDiv with a concentration in Leadership: For those called to be executive pastors or who are called to some sort of executive leadership and desire a theological education, the Master of Divinity with a concentration in Leadership is the ideal choice.

  • MDiv with a concentration in Youth and Family Ministries: Youth pastors and other youth leaders will find that a Master of Divinity degree equips them with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively minister to students with sound biblical knowledge and relevant and practical theological training.

Master of Arts Degrees

Denver Seminary's Master of Arts degrees are designed for students who are called to ministries in teaching and apologetics, doctoral studies or specific ministry roles and contexts. All of our MA programs build on a biblical and theological core and provide an integrated approach to education. Following is a list of just a sampling of Denver Seminary's MA degrees, for a complete list, please visit the Master of Arts degree programs page.

  • MA in Counseling Ministries with a concentration in Chaplaincy: For students interested in chaplaincy, but not requiring ordination, the MA in Counseling ministries with a concentration in Chaplaincy is a great option (for chaplaincy opportunities requiring ordination, the MDiv with a concentration in Chaplaincy may be a better alternative). With only 10 additional hours of coursework, the MA in Counseling Ministries with a concentration in chaplaincy could qualify you to become a military chaplain.

  • MA in Christian Formation and Soul Care: Many evagelical Christians are rediscovering the importance of the ancient practices of spiritual formation and soul care. This MA degree equips spiritual directors and soul care practitioners with the knowledge, tools, and experience they need to help people become more like Christ. Unlike the MDiv with a concentration in Christian Formation and Soul Care, the majority of courses for this degree are centered around Christian formation and soul care (32 hours versus the 10 hours in the MDiv concentration). Students in this degree program still receive a solid biblical and theological foundation, but a majority of coursework is devoted to Christian formation and soul care.

  • MA in Counseling (Community Counseling): Denver Seminary's MA in Counseling was the first program of its type offered by a seminary to be accredited by CACREP (the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs). This degree program prepares students for the state of Colorado licensure exam and work with a Christian counseling or secular counseling clinical program. Students in this degree program receive hands-on, practical experience through Shepherd's Gate Counseling Center, Denver Seminary's on-site Christian counseling center that provides low-cost, caring community counseling; all students will also participate in an intensive internship program. For students seeking a biblically and theologically based Christian counseling education that will prepare them for licensure by the state of Colorado, the MA in Counseling (Community Counseling) is the degree of choice.

  • MA in Leadership: Denver Seminary's Master of Arts in Leadership offers a customizable degree program that focuses on equipping effective leaders to serve in the Body of Christ. Students are trained for Christian leadership by learning to understand and develop their own leadership style and even to develop their own philosophy of Christian leadership and ministry based on solid theological, philosophical and leadership principles.

  • MA in Leadership with a concentraion in Intercultural Ministry: With the ever expanding global arena -- both in secular and Christian worlds -- it is important that leaders who understand how to minister in intercultural contexts be equipped for effective service. Denver Seminary offers Intercultural Ministry programs to train future leaders for this purpose (see also the MDiv with a concentration in Intercultural Ministry).

  • MA in Youth and Family Ministries: Denver Seminary's Master of Arts in Youth and Family Ministries equips men and women for effective, relevant and integrative leadership with students in a wide variety of youth ministry settings.
