Immigration, as we all know, is a difficult topic. The media and politicians sometimes are not very helpful, because they can reduce the discussion to a series of bullet points. Complexity is avoided, and rhetoric takes the place of compassion and solid reason.

The change in the make-up of Congress could very well have a negative impact on the possibility of comprehensive immigration reform. We will have to wait and see. Perhaps there will be movement on more limited issues, like the DREAM Act.

At this point, as the future will begin to become clearer over the next months, it is important to continue to work on the perspectives of those who claim to follow Jesus by communicating the truths of Scripture that speak to immigration and by clarifying the muddy waters of misinformation that permeate the national discourse. In this blog entry and the next few entries I will point you to some constructive resources – books (ones to read, some to avoid!) and sites on the internet.

I begin with a series that is being posted on http://faithandimmigration.org/ccirblog. There you will find several topics listed under “Mythbusters.” These include, for example, arguments against those who argue that immigrants have a net negative economic impact. These pieces are well written and informative. Enjoy and learn!

Christians need to consider local initiatives and study groups in their own cities and counties. Just go to city council and announce that you think this is a huge issue that requires bi-partisan input and that you would like to initiate a study group to present recommendations to your city council. Your name and contact information will automatically be recorded and you will get feedback.
