Master of Divinity Equivalency Required Courses for DMin Program

The Association of Theological Schools requires a Master of Divinity or its equivalent to enter any accredited Doctor of Ministry program. A 3.0 GPA is required, but exceptions for extenuating circumstances may be granted by the D.Min Committee. If you have a M.A. degree (in a field related to your proposed D.Min. studies; minimum 48 semester hours), but not a M.Div., the equivalency of your coursework will be evaluated by Denver Seminary.  At a minimum, this will include 75 semester hours of master’s level work which must include courses fulfilling the following content curriculum requirements:

Christian Doctrine

  • Understanding tasks, resources, and methods of theology.
  • Understanding the doctrines of revelation, Scripture, God, creation, providence, human person, sin, person and work of Christ, salvation, nature and mission of the church, major theological systems, and general and personal eschatology.
  • Application of the historical context and biblical foundation of these doctrines to life and ministry.

Apologetics and Ethics

  • Training in the practice of Christian apologetics and the skills involved in building a strong intellectual case for Christian theism.

  • Understanding and applying the tools used to discern non-Christian viewpoints, including naturalism, deism, pantheism, and postmodernism.

Biblical Interpretation

  • Introduction to the basic principles and methods for correct interpretation of Scripture and the essential methods for performing these tasks.

  • Understanding the history of interpretation and appropriate presuppositions, preunderstandings, and goals of interpretation.

  • Study of the different genres of both the Old and New Testaments.

Old Testament

  • Survey of the historical background, key texts, and critical issues of the entire Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi.

  • Overview of God’s plan as unveiled throughout the Old Testament, including what was required of His people throughout the history of the nation of Israel.

New Testament

  • Survey of the historical background, key texts, and critical issues of the entire New Testament from  Matthew to Revelation.

  • Overview of the life and work of Christ, including His essential teachings, the theology of evangelism, and the creation of the early church.

  • Application of New Testament teachings to contemporary life and a theology of evangelism.

  • Coursework should include preparation of an inductive Bible study focused on a New Testament passage of choice.

Homiletics

  • Introduction to the basics of sermon preparation and delivery.

  • Preparation and delivery of at least two biblically grounded sermons.

Intercultural Ministry

  • Understanding of the Biblical foundations, historical development, and socio-cultural context of the church’s mission task and the methodological implementation issues involved, both overseas and in North America.

  • Overview of an effective program of mission in the local church.

Leadership in Preaching & Pastoral Ministry - Additional Requirement

Greek Exegesis:

  • Two survey courses in Greek exegesis, such as a course in the Greek exegesis of selected portions of Romans and a course in the Greek exegesis of the book of James, will meet the curriculum content of this content area.

  • This curriculum content can also be met through a survey course introducing the essential elements of Greek grammar, including an introduction to tools used in Greek language and exegesis.  This survey course would include experience in the Greek exegesis of a portion of the New Testament and identify and demonstrate use of the best tools for Greek exegesis, including computer-based resources.  An overview of how to avoid common pitfalls and fallacies in the use of the Greek language would also be included.
