Craig Hospital Graduate to give Holiday Concert for Craig Patients

WHO/WHAT: Daryl Holmlund, a former Craig Hospital patient from Loveland, will be sharing his gift of music with Craig Hospital patients and staff on December 14,2007.

On November 24th, 2004, Holmlund was driving home from college for Thanksgiving with two of his high school buddies when a deer jumped in front of the car. The driver swerved and the car went off the road and rolled once while Holmlund was sleeping in the backseat, causing Holmlund to be ejected from the car. The two other passengers were not seriously injured. After brief treatment at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Holmlund was moved to Craig Hospital where he remained as a patient for three and a half months.

Holmlund suffered several injuries in the accident including a collapsed lung, skull fractures, jaw fractures, broken ribs and the most serious injury: crushed Thoracic- 8 vertebrae, damaging his spinal cord. Though he has some muscular control and sensation, he has no functional use of his legs. Holmlund was released on March 15, 2005, and moved back home to live with his mom before returning to Grand Rapids, Michigan to continue his education at Calvin College.

Since his release from Craig Hospital he has driven 45,000 miles in his specially equipped vehicle, he has completed three semesters at Denver Seminary, handcycled a couple thousand miles, played music in a variety of locations, and completed the recording, the first CD of his band Sauni's Big Jump.

On December 14, 2007 he will return to Craig Hospital, where he started his journey of healing. Sauni's Big Jump, named after a gold fish that has since passed, will be performing tracks from their inspirational CD for Craig patients.
