Ciudad de Dios, which means “City of God,” is a poor area on the outskirts of Arequipa. It is here and in other areas like it where many people from the highlands of Peru have settled as they search for a better life in the city. The streets are made of dust, the homes have no running water or sewer systems, and the people work hard just to live. But in the midst of this difficulty, something beautiful is forming.
Peruvian Christians from El Camino, a TEAM-related church in Arequipa, go to Ciudad de Dios regularly to minister to children, teens, women, and men. Some of them walk from house to house seeking to engage the people of the area in conversation and begin a relationship with them. The goal of this ministry is to establish a community center to help meet the physical needs of the people. Some women have already attended a training course in knitting to help them to enter the work force in the large textile industry in Arequipa. In addition to the knitting there are also plans to establish a day care center and perhaps other workshops so that people can learn job skills and thus have a more stable life. This community center will serve as the foundation of a church that will transform the lives of many people in Ciudad de Dios.
Are you willing to form a team with Peruvian Christians to reach out to this needy area? Are you gifted in teaching children, teens, or adults? Do you have a heart of compassion for the needy of this world? Are you skilled in organization or logistics? Are you willing to form relationships with needy people and learn from them? Are you willing to allow these people to change your life?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, then perhaps you should Come Walk with the Urban Poor in Arequipa.
